15 years ago, James returned to painting fulltime; predominantly painting landscape, "en plain air". He is not interested in following fashions or innovation for its own sake, but more concerned with striving for excellence and being true to what he sees.

Over recent years he has divided his time between London and Europe and sometimes New Zealand in the winter months. Presently he is living in Sitges, Spain, painting the nearby forests and seascapes.
